Homework: Motivators
It’s important to understand why/how to get people to do things. Think of this as an energy source, in terms of physics. Putting gasoline in an electric car is using the wrong energy source. Using dynamite to push your car forward a few feet might accomplish the goal, but has significant negative consequences.
Take 5-10 minutes to examine your own motivators. Money is a common one, but after a certain point, isn’t all the great, reaching diminishing returns.
Some common motivators are:
Recognition/appreciation
Growth/development
Purpose/meaning
Autonomy
Money
Challenge
Security
Peer relationships/community
Have you shared these with your manager or lead? Do they know whether you run on gasoline or electric? They might have been trying to load you up with recognition, when you really wanted purpose. Having your manager speak the right language to you is crucial!
