Homework: Allocation
On a sheet of paper write down the different pieces of your job, over the last month (or for an average week), one item per line. This might include things like ‘oncall’, ‘standup’, ‘writing a design doc’, ‘backlog grooming’
Once you have this list, next to each item, write the amount of time you’ve spent on this task over the last month. These numbers should roughly add up to the total time you’ve spent at work.
Take some time to reflect on these numbers, make a pie chart if you’re really motivated.
Now, create your ‘ideal’ allocation. In an ideal career, what tasks do you do each week? How much time do you spend on each one? How many total hours do you want to spend on your career each week?
